Central Mass High School Baseball Teams to Watch

Friday, March 02, 2012

The 2012 Central Mass High School Baseball season is just about ready to get underway. For weeks, teams have been holed up in school gyms, indoor cages and enclosed facilities. Now, the gates holding them off the field are about to come crashing down! Here we go – let’s take a look at some of the talent manning the diamond this spring. Hands down, this week is loaded with some of the best baseball players around!

St. Peter Marian High School – 2011 record: 11-11 (including playoffs)
Head Coach: Ed Riley

Joe Consolmagno (Senior - CF/P) - In 2011, Consolmagno batted .309 and swiped 13 bases. Named a 2012 captain, Consolmagno will get his chance to lead a strong Guardian team in 2012. He is considered one of the best outfielders in Central Mass and is the quiet leader that his teammates need to follow if they hope to return to the CMASS District Tournament in 2012. Consolmagno has committed to UMASS Lowell to play baseball next year.

Tim Brutto diving back after a pick-off attempt.

Tim Brutto (Senior - RF/P) – Another top Central Mass outfielder, Senior Captain, Tim Brutto will be hungry to make it back to the CMASS District Tournament in his final year. In 2011 he batted .310 as a junior. Brutto is extremely fast and athletic and displays a potent arm on the mound and in the outfield. Brutto will be an exciting player to watch in 2012. He has committed to Endicott to play baseball after high school.

Steve Flynn (Senior - 1B/P) – Flynn returns, bringing his 2011 .375 batting average with him. The Guardians will look for Flynn to upgrade his strong 2011 performance and lead this squad on the field. Already considered one the top players in Central Mass, look for Flynn to be a major part of the 2012 SPM Guardians. He is currently undecided for college.

Jon Roy (Junior - 3B) – Roy was a standout sophomore, batting .425 in 2011. He’s a solid third baseman and the Guardians are looking for Roy to contribute once again in 2012. He possesses a solid arm and leadership qualities that speaks through his actions – a future leader for SPM. Roy is still unsure as to where he will play for college.

2012 Outlook: Loaded guns ready to take their shot!

Burncoat High School – 2011 Record: 14-8; CMASS D-1 Semi-Finalists
Head Coach: Brian Sargent

Regan Aghdam (Senior-SS) – A 2011 Inter-High All-Star, Regan Aghdam is a smooth fielder and will be a consistent bat for the 2012 Patriots. In 2011, Aghdam batted .333 and is expected to be slotted in the 3-hole this spring. Though the 2012 Patriots will bring back several senior All-Stars, there’s no doubt that Aghdam will be a major part in the success of Burncoat in 2012. He has committed to play at URI next year

Sean McGrail (Senior-P/OF) – McGrail is the staff ace of the 2012 Patriots and rightfully so. Last season, he threw 2 complete games in the 2011 CMASS District Tournament. In addition, he also batted .385 during playoffs. McGrail was an Inter-High All-Star in 2011 and will be a part of a strong senior core for the 2012 Patriots. He has signed a letter of intent to play at UMASS.

Ryan O'Connor (Senior-1B) – The 2012 Burncoat Patriots will feature five Inter-High All-Stars. O’Connor is one of them. After batting .350 in the regular season, he was a key piece to the 2011 success of Burncoat as it was O’Connor who drove in 2 runs that clinched the Patriots their first first league championship in over a decade. The 2012 team will look for O’Connor to reprise his role if they hope to be another playoff threat in 2012.

Charles Barbon (Senior OF/C) – Barbon no doubt leads the pack of 2012 “senior-heavy” Burncoat Patriots. In 2011, his .532 batting average led the Inter-High for a second straight year. He was also a Telegram & Gazette All-Star and named Inter-High CO-MVP. Going into his fourth year, he’s carrying an impressive .500 career batting average into the 2012 season. Barbon is still undecided as to his plans for next year.

Quinn Moynihan (Senior-2B) – Moynihan batter .339 in 2011 and was an Inter-High All-Star. His 2011 Season was capped by a 2-out, 2-RBI single to lead the Patriots to victory against SPM to advance them into the semi-finals of the CMASS District Tournament. Moynihan will man second base for Burncoat in 2012. He has committed to Bridgton Academy.

2012 Outlook: All-Star loaded roster – locked, stocked and ready to go!

Blackstone Valley Tech – 2011 record: 14-6 (including playoffs)
Head Coach: Anthony Leonelli

Danny Avery (Junior – RHP/OF) – Avery’s 2011 4-5 record on the mound doesn’t show just how good he really was for the Beavers last season. He held a 2.37 ERA, struck out 49 in 42 innings of work – plenty good to be expected to lead the 2012 pitching staff. Offensively, Avery batted .467, had 17 RBI, 7 doubles and 3 triples – he put up these numbers as a sophomore 2011. He was named CAL All-Star and well as a Milford Daily News Divisional All-Star. Avery is still undecided for college.

Cam Fiorentino rips a single up the middle.

Cam Fiorentino (Junior – SS/RHP) – A 20 game starter for the 2011 Beavers, Fiorentino led the team in runs scored (26), hits (27) and on base percentage (.511). He also swiped 15 bases while knocking in 14 runs. His 2011 batting average was .461. Like fellow teammate, Avery, Fiorentino was just a sophomore last season. Fiorentino will be looked to play short as well as take an expanded role on the mound in 2012. Fiorentino is still undecided about his plans after high school.

2012 Outlook: Juniors lead the way – should be contender in 2012.
