Wizards’ late rally stuns Boston

Sunday, January 23, 2011

The Celtics received some good news Saturday regarding Shaquille O’Neal’s injury. The euphoria didn’t carry over onto the court.

John Wall banked in a 3-pointer with under a minute remaining as the Washington Wizards rallied for an 85-83 win over Boston at the Verizon Center to snap the Celtics’ five-game winning streak.

The Wizards (13-29) trailed by as many as 16 points in the opening quarter, but stormed back in the second and third quarters to pull to within a basket entering the fourth.

Wall put Washington ahead for good when he kissed a three off the glass with the shot clock winding down to snap an 81-81 tie. The Celtics (33-10) had a chance to win after Kevin Garnett hit a layup to cut the deficit to one and Rajon Rondo stole the ball from Wall on the ensuing possession, but Paul Pierce’s jumper from 18 feet out hit the back of the rim.

Earlier in the day, the Celtics announced that they don’t think O’Neal’s hip injury -- sustained in Friday’s win over Utah -- is serious. O’Neal did not travel for Saturday’s game and has now missed 10 games this season.

Wall scored the final five points for Washington and finished with 16. Rashard Lewis led the team with 18 points. Garnett scored 17 points for Boston and Ray Allen finished with 16.

The Celtics will host Cleveland on Tuesday night at 7:30. The Cavaliers lost their 16th consecutive game Saturday against Chicago.
