Worcester 78’s Climb to 4th in ABA Rankings

Thursday, November 16, 2017

The Worcester 78’s of the American Basketball Association (ABA) have won three straight games and have climbed to fourth in the ABA’s rankings out of over 100 teams.

“It is very early in the season and we still have a lot of work to do, but it's hard to ask for a better start for our club and nice to see what we are doing being recognized by the league. Coach Leonelli has assembled a really strong group of players, exclusively from Massachusetts and Rhode Island, that are getting better together on a week to week basis,”  said Tom Marino, 78's team owner.

In their last game, the 78’s beat the Atlantic Coast Cardinals 151-131.

78's guard Tony Gallo (Coppin State University, Lynn, MA) finished with 45 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in a stunning performance. Former WPI team captain Sam Longwell (Acton, MA) scored 31 on a 12 of 18 shooting performance, adding 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Jose Cruz Jr., the MVP of the Shrewsbury High School championship team in 2010, added 8 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks to the effort.

Prior to that, the 78's went on the road to Paterson, NJ to open the season where they defeated last season's Northeast Division winners, league semi-finalist and then #7 ranked Jersey Express on the road in Paterson, NJ on November 4. The following day the team hosted its home opening game and defeated New England Outtatowners.

Next up

The 78’s return to action on Saturday, November 18 at 7 p.m. when they host the New York Court Kings at the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester.

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
