Worcester Fishing Duo Premieres Third Episode of Get Bent TV

Monday, July 20, 2015

John Field

After work and on the weekends, John Field and Anthony Romeo go off on fishing adventures all across New England to film episodes for their joint project, Get Bent TV - a new aged fishing show that educates and entertains a younger generation of fishing enthusiasts.

Their third installment of Get Bent TV, sent Field and Romeo to western New York in search of the spring steelhead trout spawn. The episode was filmed on the Niagara River and the famous 18-Mile Creek.

SEE VIDEO BELOW: Third Installment of Get Bent TV

Field, from Douglas, currently works as a bartender and manager of the Banner Bar & Grille in Worcester. Romeo, of Worcester, owns and runs Gym & Juice, a supplement and nutrition bar located inside World Gym at the Greendale Mall in Worcester.

GoLocalWorcester was able to sit down with the fishing duo recently to discuss these adventures and the hope of breaking into the outdoor television market.

GLW: Where and when did you decide that Get Bent TV needed to happen and what inspired you to start filming?

JF: About four or five years ago I was really getting into video and I loved doing outdoor shooting. Fishing was always a big hobby of mine, even though I was never really too good at it. I never really had anyone to show me until recently. I met Tony at the gym and we both started talking and both shared the passion of fishing. We are both like-minded people and highly motivated. We just started last Spring and went out and started filming everything. We've learned a lot along the way and we decided that we wanted Get Bent TV to show people what's really out there and give them basic skills and knowledge about how to fish, and where to look for certain fish.

AR: After we met, we kicked around the idea of going fishing. When we went, John brought the camera and before I knew it, it evolved into this really unique process. John would really capture moments from a fisherman's point of view. These things that people would never really get to see happen. With the background of being outdoors and going out and enjoying this type of stuff, it really made for a great partnership. I knew that fishing was something we both enjoyed and it has evolved into adventures and trying to attract a younger demographic of people.

GLW: How long have you two been fishing?

AR: I've been fishing for the past 20 years or so.

JF: For me, it was off and on during high school, but probably the last five or six years I've been doing a lot of fishing.

Anthony Romeo

GLW: Ultimately, where do you see Ge tBent TV going in the future? What’s the goal of the show?

JF: We are trying to do the show in a different way than everyone else. Most fishing shows these days are kind of boring and there's not a lot of action. We mixed in some music to go along with the video to try to connect with a younger generation to persuade them to go outside more. If people watch Get Bent TV and they become inspired to go outside or go on some type of adventure, then that will make this whole thing a success for us.

AR: There's almost a misconception of any outdoor activity - whether it be fishing or hunting - in which you have to be this old-timer with this secret knowledge. We are really trying to break that wall down and reach out to a younger demographic. It's not just about fishing. It's about the whole process and challenge of trying something new and overcoming those challenges.

JF:  I'm playing the amateur fisher - which I am, so I guess I'm not really playing it - and I'm learning a ton from Tony along the way. We want to have that connection where if people see me doing it, then anyone can do it.

GLW: What’s it like working together? Are there every any issues spending all that time on the water with one another?

AR: John takes the lead on the technical aspects. For each trip, such as the New York trip (see video below), we had a goal. We wanted to catch steelhead trout. We knew that the process, the film, and breaking it down to show people how that happened was very important.

JF: We just go with it. If one of us has an idea, then we try to do it. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work out. I think we both have the same vision for this, what we want and what's going to work. Trusting each other's judgment makes things much easier.

GLW: If you could tell our readers where the best places to fish in Central Massachusetts are, where would that be?

AR: I think the question really comes down to - What do you want to do? Do you want to just go out and throw a rod or do you want to walk around and fish?

JF: I love Whalom Lake in Douglas. It's my favorite spot to fish and it's where I started fishing. There's all kinds of fish in there. It's a good spot to just boat around on and enjoy the day. If you really want to go for a fish and fish hard, and put some hours in and get up early, then Quabbin is my favorite for that.

AR: If you're an individual that wants to go out for the day and boat, Quabbin offers boat rentals. The scenery out there is unbelievable. We have video of coyotes, and we've seen deer out there. Our next episode is actually filmed at the Quabbin Reservoir in search of small mouth bass and lake trout.
