Worcester Hydra Look to Bounce Back from Emotional Defeat
Saturday, June 30, 2012
The Hydra (3-3-5) held a 2-1 lead over Northeast Division leading GPS Portland in the 87th minute Wednesday night. But Portland (8-3-1) attacker Eric Anderson scored two goals at point-blank range in the next three minutes to hand the Hydra a deflating loss.
"I could write a book on 100 different ways to lose a soccer game because I've been on the short end of so many games like that," Hydra coach Elvis Comrie said. "We have limited practice time, and finishing out a game like that is just not something we've had the chance to work on. We wanted to keep (the ball) in the corners (of the field) so that, if we lost possession, it would not have hurt us. We have no one to blame but ourselves, but we have to keep our composure and move past it."
Now, Worcester hits the road to play in two of the more difficult venues in the PDL this weekend as they face the Vermont Voltage Saturday and the Ottawa Fury on Sunday. While Wednesday's loss to Portland almost surely ended Worcester's dreams of a division championship in its inaugural season, Comrie says his team is excited to be back on the road competing.
"I've always enjoyed away games, and the guys do to. It brings the team together and keeps you focused," Comrie said. "From what I've heard from scouting reports, the two teams we're playing this weekend both bring in large crowds that appreciate good soccer. They're going to be intense atmospheres. The players are really excited to play in those conditions."
Though a division title is now all but out of the question, Comrie is happy with the direction of his young team. The Hydra have gotten stellar play from leading scorer Alencar Junior, goalie Jose Silva and defenseman Chris Ager. Comrie says he has been impressed with how far his team has come given limited practice time, and sees this year as just the start of a run of success for the new franchise.
"I'm very pleased with the collection of players we have and what they've done in a short period of time," Comrie said. "They've gone out and represented the club and themselves well. This is going to be a process, and we have to be patient, but these guys have come together, and they really play for each other. I'm proud of everything they've done so far.
The Hydra face the Voltage Saturday at 7 pm, then head north to take on Ottawa the next day at 3 pm.
