Worcester Lacrosse Showdown

Chris Noyes, Assumption

Following a snow delay that postponed their first match of the season, Clark University and Assumption College are set to face off at 7 PM on March 1 at Assumption College's Multi-Sport Stadium.

The first round of the first annual Worcester City Cup, the winner will play in the Championship on Saturday against Anna Maria College, who beat Becker College on Tuesday, 9-4. The losing team will face Becker in the consolation game.

The last meeting between the Greyhounds and Cougars was last March, when Assumption beat Clark 12-6. The game featured hat tricks from three Greyhound players who have graduated and five assists from Junior Connor MacNeil. Clark Junior Nick Figiola also had a hat trick, and Senior Phil Winslow added four assists and a goal.

Watch for ground balls from former Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year, Assumption Senior Chris Noyes, who has not had less than 60 in each of his first three seasons. Noyes should also be expected to win quite a few face-offs, with 349 out of 640 won in his career (54%). Clark's Matt Fields will compete in those face-offs, with a 281 out of 489 (57%) record over his own career.

Watch for Cougars' Senior Chris Johnson to score in bunches and for Winslow to assist these goals. Johnson led the team with 24 goals last season and Winslow led the team with 19 assists.
Offensively for the Greyhounds, look out for MacNeil to improve on last years 54 points with the help of a fresh crop of freshman and sophomores like Paul Curran and Garret Smith.

Johnson spoke of the game as both a first and last opportunity. “This is my last shot to beat Assumption. We're 0-2 right now and I'd like to go out with a win,” Johnson said. “This is the first Worcester City Cup, and my only shot to win it. I want to get that trophy.”
