NEW: Worcester’s Hydra FC Looking for Back-to-Back Wins
Friday, May 18, 2012
The Hydra recorded the first victory in franchise history last week, a 2-0 win over the Boston Victory, and coach Elvis Comrie’s defensive approach appears to be paying off.
“The first thing that I emphasize and teach is how to defend,” Comrie said. “And if you’re going to compete in any sport, and look at all the teams that won championships- it’s their defense.”
The Hydra have played stellar defense thus far, allowing just a single goal in their first two games. Goal keeper Oliver Blum has been sensational in net this year, and the defense in front of him has made his job easier.
Opposing teams have only taken eight shots a game against the Hydra, thanks in large part to the play of defenders Taylor Washington, Colin Murphy, Matheus Candido and Derek McCaffrey. Comrie has been impressed with the solid play of his defense this early in the season.
“They’ve done a very good job at applying the things that we ask them to do to put ourselves in position to compete and win games,” Comrie said. “Those guys have done a phenomenal job, but it’s been a team collective effort that has allowed us to do what we’ve done so far.”
After getting shutout in their first game, the Hydra offense came alive last week, and Alencar Junior was a big reason why. Junior made the PDL Team of the Week after scoring both of Hydra FC’s goals in last week’s win. Through two games, Junior ranks in the PDL’s Top-10 points, goals and overall shots.
The Hydra take the field tonight at Commerce Bank Field at Foley Stadium. The game is set to begin at 7 pm.
