The LOOK: Expert Fixes for Bad Hair Days

Friday, November 12, 2010

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and now he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Introducing Frank Barbosa, Newport-based celebrity stylist who brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

Let's face it: we all have good hair days and bad hair days.

On good ones, you cop a look in every mirror you pass... you stand and walk taller, you take time to pick something out of your fashion arsenal to go with that attitude: sunglasses, earrings, a scarf. You have it all going on and it shows.

But then you have your bad hair day, and the opposite happens. Our vision of ourselves is just shattered by a misplaced hair curl or wave, or a flat, deflated head of hair. You want to throw in the towel on your look and reach for your friend... the trusty hair tie.

Sometimes that's the best we can do, but use my tips to make it through the day:

1. If you choose to pony it up, there's a way to make that work for you. Reach around and feel for your occipital bone at the base of your head: this is where your pony should tie.

2. With a medium curling iron, bend most of the pony for bounce and shape. A flat, straight pony only works on the runway with a lot of makeup and runway clothing.

3. If you're working the pony most days, you probably need some fabulous fringe (bangs) to dress it up.

4. Is this a hat day? If it is, remember it can look fab and fierce with the right texture. Think Carrie Bradshaw and you're halfway there!

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair.
