Message: From GoLocalWorcester by Carol Anne Costa, GoLocalWorcester MINDSETTER™: You can take the teacher of out of the classroom but rarely can you take the classroom out of the teacher. So that is why one year ago, the old teacher in me began the process of nudging my niece Cristina, at the time a junior at Saint Mary Academy-Bay View to participate in the Voice of Democracy audio essay competition. My pushing and prodding (I like to think) inspired Rhode Island’s winning audio essay entitled “4400 Words that Changed the World” in response to the 2013 prompt, “ Is our Constitution still relevant?” Meanwhile in Massachusetts, Trent Sullivan, a senior from Medford High School was contemplating his winning essay beginning with a quote from Henry Clay, “The Constitution of the United States was made not merely for the generation that then existed, but for posterity- unlimited, undefined, endless, perpetual posterity.” Both Cristina and Trent with their winning thoughts and delivery earned a trip to Washington DC, over $5000.00 in scholarship money, each named a National Merit Scholar, each given a full youth conference tuition and trip to Freedom’s Foundation at Valley Forge and made 54 new friends as varied as the climates from which they hail. http://www.golocalworcester.com/politics/carol-anne-costa-voice-of-democracy-vfws-homerun
