Message: From GoLocalWorcester by David Schaefer, GoLocalWorcester Guest MINDSETTER™: As reported by Aaron Nicodemus in his October 13 Business column in the Telegram and Gazette, the historic Worcester Tennis Club on Sever Street—possibly America’s oldest still-existing tennis club, with some 9 or 10 beautifully maintained red-clay courts—is on the financial skids, and may soon have to close owing to declining membership and consequently financial resources. Doubtless one handicap facing WTC is the fact that on account of its urban location, the club cannot install lights, which would enable working people to play in the evening. (Neighbors would understandably object to the installation of lights.) But as I pointed out to Mr. Nicodemus, WTC’s problems do not reflect what a spokesman for the club apparently offered as an explanation—"waning interest in tennis among the public." That explanation is refuted by the fact that another local, member-owned tennis club—the Holden Towers Tennis Club, to which I happen to belong, located on Brattle St. in Holden, just over the Worcester line - is flourishing with a record number of members (including a number of former WTC members who resigned over the past decade or so in order to join Holden Towers instead). http://www.golocalworcester.com/politics/david-schaefer-worcester-tennis-clubs-regrettable-past
