Great Places to Cool Off in Central Mass

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

We are in store for a couple of near record hot days on Wednesday and Thursday and a long summer still to come. These will be coupled with the usual demands to stay cool any way you know how. But escaping the heat doesn’t have to be a hassle. There are plenty of fun things to do in central Mass made just for the days and months ahead. Here are just a few notable suggestions.

Breezy Picnic Grounds and Waterslides

520 Northwest Main Street, Douglas
This recreational facility is tailor-made for families looking to escape for a day in the midst of a hot summer. Go for a picnic, but when it comes time to cool off, take advantage of the unlimited rides on the three 300’ waterslides or go for a nice swim in the Whitens Reservoir. Click here for more information.

Coco Keys Water Resort Hotel

150 Royal Plaza Drive, Fitchburg
This 55,000 sq. feet indoor park has countless water attractions. From water slides to pools, to the Palm Grotto Indoor/Outdoor spa and the Coconut Grove Adventure River, kids and adults alike will surely find something to enjoy. There is even an arcade for those in the family that may not wish to join in the water festivities. Click here for more information.

Leominster State Pool

111 Viscoloid Avenue, Leominster
For those in the Leominster area that may not have the time or need to make a whole day out of escaping the heat, the Leominster State Pool is available for a quick cool down and/or some much needed relaxation. The cost is only $3 per person, and the pool is open all week from 12-7 pm, with a family swim from 6-7.  Sign the kids up for swim lessons, too!

Quinsigamond Lake Park

10 North Lake Avenue, Worcester
This beautiful DCR facility located on Lake Quinsigamond offers a number of opportunities to forget about the heat. You can swim, sail, fish and picnic in the Regatta Point area. If you choose to visit the Lake Park, you will have opportunities to play some tennis or picnic, and then cool off on the swimming beach.

Libraries and Museums

Cool, air-conditioned libraries and museums are always perfect places to go if one wishes to beat the heat through means besides swimming or otherwise getting wet. They are plenty of places in the Worcester area that can help with this goal. Most notably, there is the Worcester Public Library located at 3 Salem Square and the Worcester Art Museum at 55 Salisbury Street.
