Rhode Island Hospital Launches New Safety Site

Friday, January 14, 2011

Rhode Island Hospital launched a new web site this week touting its commitment to its patients and their wellbeing. “We recognized that we had an opportunity to be more open and transparent about our efforts to be a national leader in patient safety and quality,” said Cathy E. Duquette, Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer at Rhode Island Hospital. The multimedia web site, developed in a collaborative effort between Oomph, a Providence-based web development and strategy agency, and Lifespan’s marketing and communications department, includes video, ratings and information pertinent to patients, their families and the general public to help them understand the principles and guidelines that underscore Lifespan’s approach to patient care. Duquette says the site comprises more than 70 pages of information about quality and safety efforts at the hospital.

Getting the Word Out

“We want the community to know we are committed to providing high quality, safe care at Rhode Island Hospital,” said Duquette. “This new site is one way for our patients to learn more about our commitment as well as some of the details behind specific quality and safety initiatives in place.” In addition to providing information and a hyperlink to the site from Rhode Island Hospital’s home page, Lifespan’s marketing and communications department is reaching Rhode Islanders and beyond via their robust Twitter feed (@RIHospital), Facebook page and a video on YouTube.

An Insider’s Look

Duquette says the site gives patients who have an interest relative to a specific service a snapshot of how staff and physicians are working together in various areas, including cancer care, behavioral health and women’s health, critical care, to continuously improve the quality and safety of care the hospital provides. “Moving forward, we plan to provide additional comparative quality data on this site as it becomes available,” she said. “We believe this is a very telling story, and the community will learn that they truly have one of the best hospitals in the country right in their back yard.”
