NEW: Barry Manilow Kicks Off Musical Instrument Drive for Worcester Schools

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Barry Manilow

Legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow kicked off an instrument drive for Worcester Public Schools by donating a Yamaha piano today.

The star hopes his donation will lead to others donating to this cause. To sweeten the deal, anyone who donates a new or gently used musical instrument to the DCU Center Box Office will receive two free tickets to Manilow's September 14th concert.

“I’m thrilled to be able to help bring the gift of music to these kids," Manilow said.

The DCU Center will be the home base for the instrument drive here in Worcester. The drive will run from now until Manilow's show on Septbember 14th, and you can drop off instruments during normal box office hours.

"Worcester Public Schools is extremely appreciative of the generosity of Barry Manilow in generating community support for our musical program.  The Arts are a critical component in affording students a very well-rounded education and developing life-long interests and appreciation of music. These instruments will provide opportunity for more students to experience the joy of music through our schools,” said Dr. Melinda Boone, Superintendent of Worcester Public Schools.

The drive is done in conjunction with the Manilow Music Project (MMP), a division of the Manilow Fund for Health and Hope. Its primary focus is to provide musical instruments to high schools and middle schools and to provide music scholarships at universities throughout the US, Canada, and the UK.
