Tips for Family Fun: Farms, Backyard Time, & More

Friday, September 17, 2010

Every Friday, enjoy inside tips for making the most of your weekend from Anisa Raoof, publisher and founder of Kidoinfo, the parents' guide for Rhode Island and beyond.

Kido Tip 1. Get really peaceful at Burnside Park

Make your peaceful family life a universal wish at Burnside Park in Downcity this weekend. The United Nations International Day of Peace in Providence is a free, family-friendly event that features entertainers, activities, and exhibitors reflecting RI's diverse communities. The event kicks off at 3pm, but stick around for a truly lovely highlight at 5pm - a silent Walking Meditation for Peace around Burnside Park. For more information, read here, and for more information about the Peace Flag Project, visit their Web site, here.

Kido Tip 2. Put little hands to work in the backyard

Backyard projects are a perfect place for small ones to pitch in without doing any potential damage to housewares. And who doesn't love getting dirty while helping out? Set aside an hour this weekend to do some family yard maintenance... show kids how to deadhead mums, pull out expired annuals, and turn over mulch piles. It teaches independence and knowhow. And for a fun backyard game at breaktime, check out Backyard Bingo here.

Kido Tip 3. Get out and play at a farm this weekend

Kids love farm visits, and Rhode Island has so many great spots for hay rides, apple picking, and corn maze play, you can easily do one or two a weekend throughout the season.

For a list of family-friendly farms and other fall fun stuff, go here.
