NEW: Worcester Hurricane Shelter Open

Monday, October 29, 2012

In preparation for the potential effects of Hurricane Sandy, the City of Worcester and the Red Cross have announced that a shelter will open today, October 29, 2012, beginning at 4:30 PM at Worcester Technical High School, Skyline Drive. Transportation is available to the shelter by calling (508) 798-3252.

There has been no major damage to report in the City as of 3:00 PM on Monday afternoon, however, wind speed is expected to increase this evening which could result in toppled utility poles and trees, as well as snapped tree limbs, causing them to fall on power lines and disrupt electrical service.

The City's Emergency Operation Center, the base of coordination for the City's coordinated response, has been in full operation since 7:00 AM. Officials are monitoring the storm track and forecasts, assembling resources and will respond when necessary and required.

The City's Customer Service Center, at (508) 929-1300, will remain open throughout the duration of the storm. Residents should call Customer Service to report down trees, tree limbs, blocked roadways, sewage backup or other City-related storm issues. Residents should report all trees and limbs down, including those with entangled overhead wires.

The Worcester Senior Center and Worcester Public Library are closed as of 3:00 PM today. At this time there have been no decisions made on closing Public Schools. Updates will be posted to the City's website. The Department of Public Works and Parks will follow its normal Tuesday trash/recycling collection schedule. Halloween is scheduled for October 31, 2012.

Residents who choose to go to the shelter should remember to bring the following items:

  • Prescription Medications (a three-day supply)
  • Medical Testing Devices (Glucometer and test strips)
  • Medical administration devices (syringes, nebulizer)
  • Personal oxygen and supplies
  • Childcare items (diapers, wipes, formula, extra clothing)
  • Personal care needs (extra clothing, pillows, blankets)

DO NOT BRING:

  • Valuables
  • Pets (accommodations may be made if no other options are available)
