PM WEATHER UPDATE: Worst of the Blizzard Underway Now

The Blizzard of ’13 is moving right along on schedule. Usually we might see a few unexpected wrinkles here and there, but so far this storm is behaving pretty much as forecast. And quite frankly, having forecast these things for nearly 50 years, that is a very unusual situation. But so far I see no major changes in the forecast.

The most intense part of the storm is getting underway with snowfall rates set to climb into the 2-3” per hour category. It still looks like snowfall totals when it is all over later tomorrow will be around 2 feet, plus or minus 6”. Drifts will pile up over 5-10 feet and Northeast winds will continue to build with gusts near hurricane force late tonight and early tomorrow. That should lead to many power outages across the area.

The only potential glitch I can see right now is the potential for rain and sleet to mix in near and along the coast later tonight, however it had been raining on Long Island much of the day but switched over to snow as the precipitation became heavier. That snow/rain line still bears watching through the night.

Needless to say, everyone should be hunkered down at this point. This looks like it will be an historic storm and it still has several hours to go before it winds down slowly tomorrow.
