WEATHER UPDATE: Arctic Cold May Save Us From Approaching Storm

It’s hard to believe but this brutal cold we’ve had the past few days has its benefits…that is if you don’t like snow. This large dome of frigid arctic air will actually act as a giant barrier, starving any storms that may form of moisture and shunting the track off to our south and east.

Case in point is tonight. A weak storm system currently over the upper Midwest will move off the mid-Atlantic coast late tonight. If the cold air were not quite so strong and dry, normally it might have a chance to intensify rapidly and throw a pretty decent covering of snow onto New England. But it looks like this one will zip meekly by us bringing just a light coating to most areas say a dusting to inch or two of fluffy broomable white stuff with the largest accumulations (if you can call it that) near and along the south coast.

Further good news is that this frigid stretch is about over. Temperatures will moderate slowly from now through the weekend with above normal readings expected much of next week. But don’t get out the spring jackets just yet as another frigid blast is poised to hit late next week to start the month of February.
