NEW: Donahue Calls for Slots Funds to go to Route 20 Improvements
Friday, July 26, 2013
Dan Donahue, candidate for State Representative in the 16th Worcester District, today called for Worcester to receive mitigation money from the proposed Millbury slot parlor, and for that money to be held in trust to be used for extending and improving the sewer line along Route 20.
“A slot parlor just over the city line in Millbury would have potential consequences for the 16th Worcester District, and our entire city,” said Donahue. “As State Representative, I plan on using every available resource to push for mitigation money for Worcester for vital infrastructure improvements along the Route 20 corridor.”
Under Massachusetts Gaming Regulations, communities surrounding a slot parlor site are eligible for mitigation money to offset potential impacts.
“The Route 20 corridor is one of the most fertile areas for redevelopment in the city of Worcester. Finally giving the region the sewer access it deserves would bring needed jobs, businesses, and economic development to the 16th District, and an estimated $17 million in extra tax revenue to the city.”
The Route 20 sewer project has been discussed in various forms for nearly 20 years, without ever seeing fruition.
“We need to be having a serious conversation about adding to our tax base in Worcester - growing the size of the pie - not just who should pay more or who should pay less.”
