The LOOK: Spring Highlighting Trends

Friday, April 08, 2011

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and now he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

Getting ready for spring? We know that this means for many a highlight upgrade. And this season finds three highlighting trends... so here's how to ask for them.

1. The LA splice

Think surfer girl, California girl, or good ol' Narragansett Beach girl. Get this more dramatic highlight by asking for splices of color in strategic placement...  along with some weaving, this can make your look a carefree, beachy one.

2. The ombre highlite

Think SJP, right, or Jessica Biel. Ask for dipped ends in some places and midshaft down-weaving, only two or three levels lighter than your root color (or it could look like you need a retouch). Remember: pictures speak volumes.

3. The good girl foil

This is achieved by a very fine weave... not much... just to add a hint of natural highlight (about three to four levels of lift). Think Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, and the American sweethearts of the world who unite in the good girl foil.

Now welcome spring and those sun-kissed tones, no matter which girl you feel most like being!

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's currently styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair.
