The LOOK: Taking Your Summer Blonde into Fall

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

You can carry that summer shade right into fall with the right blonde strategies. Photo: e3ooo/flickr

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and he's GoLocal's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

Just because we are heading into the first part of September, there is no reason why we have to leave our summer tones back in August. Here are a couple tips on how to keep your summer blonde going strong.

Work the highlighting you already have

If you are heavy-highlighted and like your blonde without lowlighting, deepen your blonde tones at your next color appointment by getting a single process 2 shades darker than the summer tones. You'll get a fall look and still keep the tones from the sunny summer.

Panel!

Blondes can add panels of strawberry blonde, not to darken but to add contrast with another light tone. Just keep other tones away from hairline and skin tone; they read better when placed under the top shade and behind the hairline.

Return the natural

Bring back your natural tone from root to midshaft without foiling. Ask your stylist about boliaging color or painting onto hair...  he or she should know this terminology. If they don't, it may be time to research a new stylist!

Most of all, if you know what you want don't let an inexperienced stylist talk you out of a look. Until next time, happy coloring!

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
