GoLocalProv adds Chip Young to Editorial Staff

Thursday, March 10, 2011

Chip Young, one of the regions most accomplished writers and communications experts, joins the team at GoLocalProv.com as a Senior Editor.

The addition of Young – who has written extensively for a range of national and regional magazines and newspapers, including TV Guide, Shape Magazine, and The Providence Phoenix (he has been co-author of Rhode Island’s longest running political columns, Phillipe & Jorge) is a coup for the 9-month-old local digital media company

Dream Team

Young joins an editorial staff that features the talents of Meteorologist John Ghiorse, Sports Editors Scott Cordischi and Mike Parente, News and Political Editor Stephen Beale, and Lifestyle Editor Tracey Minkin to name but a few.

Recently, GoLocalProv, a new digital model for delivering local news and information, announced that after the initial 9 months of operation the site has exceeded 30% market penetration. More than 225,000 absolute unique visitors have visited the site. According to the US census there are a total of 700,000 Rhode islanders who have access to the Internet via home and/or office.

“Chip Young is a great writer, columnist and thinker. Everywhere he has worked he has been part of creating an even better organization – at Save the Bay, as a part of Ira Magaziner’s team, and in building the brand at the URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography,” said Josh Fenton, a Co-Founder of GoLocalProv.com.

“GoLocalProv is the next model of local journalism – the impact that they have made in less than a year is remarkable. From breaking investigative stories about pension abuse to covering to restaurants, business, arts – all of the site’s features – GoLocal stood out immediately among local media since its launch. I am very excited to be a part of a team that is on the cutting edge of journalism,” said Young.

Model for fact-based Journalism in the Digital Era

GoLocalProv.com is a content-driven Web platform that provides consumers with local news and information in a flexible way that enhances their lives. GoLocal develops local news, all original content, and it does not aggregate or take third-party content like reprints of stories from national newspapers or the content of the Associated Press.

“Chip joining GoLocal is another example that there is a revolution occurring in media – a shift from the static to the dynamic. Real time, video, via social – news is not finite. News and information is a constant,” said Fenton.

GoLocalProv.com features more than 40 local reporters, videographers, experts and MINDSETTERS™.

Repeatedly, GoLocalProv.com has broken news-cycle leading investigative pieces only to find traditional media, like A.H. Belo’s Providence Journal following days later.

“Our goal is to develop the highest quality and most respected content in the market from the best journalists and thinkers,” added Fenton, “Chip is widely respected and gives our readers yet another trusted source.”
