NEW: Port Development Leaders to Meet

Tuesday, April 05, 2011

Representatives from the RI Economic Development Corporation, the Quonset Development Corporation and the Providence & Worcester Railroad will weigh in with their insight and opinions to a special legislative commission, which studies potential economic opportunities in the development of port facilities in the state, at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in the Senate Lounge.

"We are extremely interested in reviewing and expanding upon how these three entities, along with the Port of Providence's maritime businesses, work in partnership to promote all of Rhode Island's waterfront assets in a way that will increase job opportunities for the thousands of men and women now unemployed or underemployed in this tough economy," said state senator and co-chair of the commission William A. Walaska.

Established as the result of a Joint Resolution approved by both legislative chambers, the special legislative commission began its study in March 2009.

Co-chair Representative Deborah Ruggiero said, "Encouraging collaboration between industries that operate along our waterfronts would strengthen our state's ports as a whole and better position Rhode Island to re-establish itself as a leader in maritime, shipping and transportation-related sectors."

The commission hearing is open to the public and will be shown on Capitol TV (Channel 15 for Cox Communications and Full Channel; Channel 34 for Verizon).
