United Way held a “Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony” at Worcester State University to celebrate “the successful tax season.”
The EITC is a federal tax refund for eligible working individuals and households. The EITC Coalition is one of the many ways that United Way of Central Massachusetts works to raise taxpayers and their children out of poverty.
Tax Facts
- 128 IRS-certified volunteers prepared 1,906 federal and state returns (6.4% more than last tax season);
- Taxes prepared at no cost, saving tax payers $285,900 in tax preparation fees
- 63% of tax clients had their refund directly deposited to a bank account (compared to 20% in 2006);
- The average refund in 2013 was $1,660;
- The average Worcester taxpayer using the VITA sites has an annual income that is between $16,000 and $20,000;
- Through the Worcester EITC Coalition’s four VITA sites, nearly $3.6 million dollars in total refunds was returned to the Worcester Community during the 2013 tax season;
- Nationwide, the Earned Income Tax Credit returns approximately $60 billion to low and moderate-income taxpayers each year.
