Providence Area Hyundai Dealers and Hyundai Hope on Wheels awarded Hasbro Children's Hospital with a Hyundai Scholar Grant today in the amount of $50,000 for pediatric cancer research.

The grant will support the work of Hasbro's Dr. Jennifer Greene Welch to evaluate the quality of Internet information obtained by parents of children with cancer.  With this donation, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has donated $200,000 to Hasbro Children's Hospital since 2010.

The need for pediatric cancer research

Cancer remains the #1 disease that claims the lives of children under 16, and 12,500 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in the US. Yet, the National Cancer Institute spends less than 4% of its annual budget on research for pediatrics. Hyundai has already pledged $18 million toward pediatric cancer research in 2011 and a total of $43 million since the inception of the program 13 years ago.

As part of the check presentation event yesterday, Providence-area children affected by cancer decorated a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe – the official vehicle of the Hope on Wheels tour – to commemorate their brave battles with cancer.
