More Than 1,000 Walkers Step Out for Hasbro Children’s Hospital

Thursday, September 29, 2011

It was a big day for walking.

More than 1,000 walkers, supporters and volunteers from across southern New England attended The Walk for Hasbro Children’s Hospital on Saturday, September 24. Patients, families, hospital staff, local businesses and the public teamed up to raise money to enhance existing programs or purchase critically needed medical equipment for the hospital’s young patients. Donations are still being accepted online at www.thewalk4hch.org.

Strides

“The Walk for Hasbro Children’s Hospital is not only a chance to help children in the future, but also to see the great strides we’ve already made,” said Timothy J. Babineau, M.D., president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital and its Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “It’s an inspiring feeling to be able to walk around and see the faces of patients and families that we have been able to help over the years. Events like this will help us to continue to improve the lives of everyone who walks though our doors.”

The Walk, presented by Mega Logistics, Inc., is a 5k (3.2 miles) fundraising walk held on a family-friendly course. This year, the Walk’s location changed from downtown Providence to a new venue at Roger Williams Park.

The festivities were kicked off by emcee Patrick Little from WPRI-TV and Fox Providence, followed by a welcome from Providence Mayor Angel Taveras. The event was filled with food, dancing and fun family activities throughout the day, including special guests The Green Apple Kids Band, as well as caricature artists and face painters. Bwana Iguana Reptile Adventure introduced families to exotic animals and Pepsi provided refreshments. Event sponsor Hasbro, Inc. hosted a tent filled with fun activities such as TWISTER, JENGA and NERF games for kids to play, in addition to the hundreds of Team Hasbro walkers and volunteers in attendance to support this year’s Walk.
