NEW: Reliant Medical to Host Celiac Support Group
Wednesday, April 25, 2012
Celiac disease, or gluten intolerance, is a genetic disorder that affects those with the disease when they eat specific food-grain antigens that are found in wheat, rye and barley. Symptoms can range from diarrhea and weight loss, to more dangerous problems like nutrient deficiencies and gastrointestinal symptoms.
The support group will begin that Saturday at 1 pm, and is scheduled to run through 3 pm. The event is meant to provide comfort to those dealing with Celiac disease every day, and also to inform them of what foods they can and should eat. Attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences living a gluten-free life, and will also be able to hear from relevant guest speakers.
One of those speakers is Deb Collins, the owner of Idgy’s Gluten Free Dining in South Yarmouth. Collins will discuss her restaurant and the wide variety of gluten-free foods available in the South Yarmouth region. Pierce’s Pantry will also present to teach attendees how to help those in need of gluten-free food, and how to access emergency gluten-free foods.
Collins will provide samples of her restaurant’s food, and other gluten-free refreshments will be provided. Friends and family member are welcome to attend. Reliant is encouraging those attending to bring a non-perishable, gluten-free food item to be donated to Pierce’s Pantry.
