6 Ways to Celebrate Fat Tuesday

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

You don't have to live in New Orleans to love Mardi Gras and get some appropriate celebrating done today. We've got six ways to laissez les bons temps roulez.

Pick up a King Cake from LaSalle Bakery

It's a classic treat on Fat Tuesday. Who'll get the tiny plastic baby baked inside and take on the privileges and obligations of the day (some folks make the baby-getter buy next year's cake). LaSalle has small (feeds 12) for $12, and large (feeds 30) for $30. La Salle Bakery, 993 Smith St, 831-9563; 685 Admiral St, 228-0081.

Get Your Cajun Ragin' at Roots Cafe

Providence's brand-new hotspot jumps right to it, with a masquerade party and music by Magnolia, RI's own Cajun Dance Band. 7:30pm, Roots Cafe, 276 Westminster St, Providence, 272-2422.

Hurricane-Force Partying at Ladder 133

It kicks off early on Douglas Ave, and goes plenty late. Get kicking with the regular Tuesday line-up with $1 tacos,

fajitas, quesadillas, guac, and special deals on Hurricane drinks (and a special Cajun menu as well). There's Team Trivia at 8pm and then the Sugarbabies Band takes over and yes, folks, there wil be DEEDS FOR BEADS (enough said). 21+, get more information at 272-7427 or at www.ladder133.com.

Sing for Beads at Cleats Sports Bar

Is there anything wilder than Mardi Gras karaoke? Find out for yourself at this Fat Tuesday party in Westerly featuring beads, New Orleans' Abita Beer, Voodoo Punch, Creole food, and more beads. 21+, no cover. Cleats Sports Bar, 116 Granite St, Westerly, 596-4107.

Full-On Fat Tuesday at McFadden's

Nobody puts more into a theme night than this downtown Providence pub and restaurant, and Fat Tuesday is no exception. Check out Mardi Gras themed drinks and apps, beads, contests, and prizes. It's where Bourbon Street meets McFadden's Boulevard. McFadden's, 52 Pine St, Providence, 861-1782.

Make Saturday a Masquerade at the Biltmore

You'll have three days to recover and fire it up again this weekend for a Mardi Gras Masquerade party at the Providence Biltmore that's a fundraiser for AIDS Care Ocean State. Enjoy live music by the Coppola Sisters Band, traditional New Orleans cuisine, and all kinds of libations. Providence Biltmore Hotel. Tickets $75, available at www.aidscareos.org or at 521-3603.
