English for Action Cup Soccer Tournament - Sign Up Now

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

English for Action, a local non-profit organization that uses the English language learning process to develop community amongst adult immigrants and advance social justice, will hold their annual fundraiser, the English for Action Cup Soccer Tournament on April 30th. From 9am-4pm at Donigian Park (off of Valley St. in Olneyville), become part of the action and have fun to support a worthy cause.

Bring your friends and family to enjoy free entertainment such as live music, karaoke, food, and international culture and health fairs! Compete on a soccer team by registering as an individual or a team to Jesse Strecker or Christina Lawrence ([email protected] OR 401-421-3181). Be sure to reserve your spot on a team before Friday 22nd.

English For Action teaches students with the Popular Education (aka Participatory Education) philosophy, which is based off the will of the students. Jesse Strecker, English for Action Lead ESOL Facilitator/Action Committee Coordinator, explains: “the essential idea is that education is most meaningful when students are talking about things that are most important to them, analyzing what is going on in the outside world and helping to develop their own classroom curriculum.”

Donations from the cup will help fund the second branch of EFA called the Action Committee, which is a student association that helps students with leadership skills to contribute toward social change. Currently, the students are teaching the community about health and nutrition through classes ranging from learning how to fix a bike with your son or learning how to garden with friends. The ultimate goal is to bring families and communities together to develop skills for a healthier lifestyle.

Can’t make it to the cup? English for Action is always looking for new volunteers and students! There are a variety of ways to get involved to become a classroom facilitator to inspire students to learn within our growing community!

Play soccer, spend time with the community and support English for Action on April 30th!
