Don’t Miss: Saplings & Spirits in Newport

Newport's 2010 Tree of the Year, a Ginkgo biloba

A savory celebration is taking root in Newport.

Saplings & Spirits will be the first annual fundraiser of the Newport Tree Society, and tickets are still available for the bash on Thursday, October 13.

For the love of trees

There is just cause for celebration. The Society has taken on two ambitious projects this fall after launching The Newport Arboretum, New England's first citywide arboretum. Now, the Society introduces a Specimen Tree Planting Program (offering free specimen trees to citizens who commit to caring for them) and a Beech and Elm Treatment Program designed to lengthen the lifespan of the aging giants.

The Society has also created the Newport Tree Walk, a guide to the city's finest public and private trees (along with historic points of interest), available for sale throughout Newport or to print online, here for free. Further, the seven mile trail is also available to download to iPhone, iPod, Touch and Android phones, with many more details.

It's another of Newport's great historic holdings, and what better time than at the beginning of leaf-peeping season to recognize it?

Saplings & Spirits, Thursday October 13, 5:30-7:30pm, Seaview Terrace, 207 Ruggles Ave, Newport. $30 donation payable in advance or at the door. RSVP 324-9204.
