Family Matters: Kid Programs at RI State Parks & More

Friday, May 20, 2011

While the weather continues to challenge, there's a sunny day coming, and it's time for getting out into nature no matter what.

Kido Tip 1. Celebrate Arnold Lobel's birthday on May 22nd!

Celebrate the birthday of this fabulous award-winning children's author and illustrator

by reading his classic tales of friendship and fun, the Frog and Toad series with your children. Plan to make your own chocolate chip cookies, play in mud puddles and sing to your garden to make it grow.

Kido Tip 2. Join the Urban Pond Procession!

The Urban Pond Procession is a collaboration of artists, scientists, educators and concerned citizens who wish to promote the health of Providence and Cranston ponds through arts and environmental education workshops.

Now in its 4th year, the Procession will be held on Saturday, May 21st (rain date May 22nd), starting at the Boat House on the southern tip of Mashapaug Pond behind the Job Lot parking lot off Reservoir Avenue at 10 am. It will weave its way through Reservoir Triangle to Liberty Elm Diner (10:30-11:00 am) where Big Nazo will join in, then on to Roger Williams Park's Roosevelt Lake, which is fed by Mashapaug Brook. After proceeding by the park's Carousel the procession will end at the Temple to Music where food, music and environmental health updates will be shared.

Park your car by the Roger Williams Park and there will be a shuttle to the beginning of the Procession. Food will be provided at the Temple to Music and water will be distributed throughout.

Kido Tip 3. The Great Outdoors Pursuit game begins this weekend!

The Great Outdoors Pursuit game is a great way for families to get outdoors while exploring a number of local Rhode Island parks. The game kicks off on May 22nd at  Lincoln Woods State Park between 11am and 3pm and will continue all summer long at different state parks. Each planned outing throughout the summer is full of fun and adventure and free activities: rock climb, fish, hike, bike, kayak, and a chance to win great prizes! Even if you choose not to participate in all the planned activities you may discover a new park and enjoy exploring it in your own way!
