Family Night at the Bandstand Returns to Milford this Summer

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Bringing multiple acts of great live music for 18 years.

The acclaimed Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra has announced the opening of the 18th consecutive summer season of concerts at the Milford Musicians Pavilion in Milford Town Park. Set to open on Tuesday, June 25, The Claflin Hill WMRC Family Night at the Bandstand 2013 series will present eight weeks of stellar outdoor concerts performed by some of the best and biggest professional music ensembles in New England.

Concerts take place every Tuesday evening beginning at 6:30 PM, (with the exception of July 2 – there is NO concert that week due to the July 4th holiday). Any concert that is postponed due to inclement weather is automatically rescheduled for Thursday of the same week.

The line-up of performers on this summer’s series includes all of the perennial favorites of the Family Night audiences –Jerry Seeco and his “Milford Jazz Machine” – a 20 piece powerhouse jazz band; “HELP!”, the Beatles tribute band; John Burrows and his “Cocabanana Band”; “The Fantasy Big Band”; Don Iacovelli and “Eight Misbehavin”; “Grupo Fantasia” – which made their Family Night debut last season, and two performances by The Claflin Hill Symphony Summer Winds – the resident ensemble of Family Night at the Bandstand.

As always, numerous genres and styles of music will be represented from "Boston Pops" style programs and light classical offerings to Broadway, Disney and jazz.

Bringing the Community Together for Almost Two Decades

“It’s hard to believe that we’re about to launch the 18th year of summer concerts,” said Paul Surapine, Executive & Artistic Director of Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra.

“Starting a summer concert series in 1996 together with the Milford Park Department, we had the goal of rejuvenating a struggling professional ensemble – The Milford Concert Band – insure its survival and growth, and to build a new audience for outdoor concerts in the “Norman Rockwellian” setting of our Town Park with its bandstand. That has since evolved into the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra and its many concert presentations and educational outreach programs, and a summer tradition that has already seen an entire generation of children grow up with their memories of summer evenings under the stars experiencing great concerts.”

The concerts often involve fun moments of audience interaction, including sing-alongs, but they're ultimately about more than just the music.

"Set against the background of the bandstand, setting sun, a sea of balloons, neighbors meeting and greeting, basketball games on the court behind the audience and citizens playing tennis on the courts adjacent -- the park comes alive as a hive of community activity , accompanied by the sounds of great tunes wafting out into the summer night air," states Surapine

"People should attend free concerts in the park to avail themselves of the opportunity to experience great music performed live, and more importantly to experience the communal sharing of that culture together with their friends and neighbors. Too often, our modern culture and society encourages and promotes the isolation of people from each other -- as they sit at home at night watching TV or surfing the internet. Concerts are a vehicle for building community and relationships, and strengthen the fabric of a town or city's resident."

The ABC Store on Exchange Street in Milford will again provide free balloons for every child in the park every week, and Nelly’s Sandwich Shop on Central Street in Milford will be in the park every week providing affordable and traditional park concert dinner offerings.

Claflin Hill’s WMRC Family Night at the Bandstand 2013 is made possible thanks to the sponsorship of numerous local enterprises including WMRC Radio, The Milford Federal Savings & Loan Association, Unibank, Nitto Denko Avecia Biotechnology, Medway Oil Company, Al Cass Fast Oil, Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, Milford Nissan, The Consigli Rugerrio Funeral Home, and Verallia, Inc.
