FDR’s Grandson to Speak in Newport

Saturday, October 30, 2010

Curtis Roosevelt, the eldest grandson of President Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt, will present a lecture, “F.D.R. as Commander-in-Chief,” on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 6pm at Salve Regina University in Newport. Roosevelt lived in the White House, along with his older sister (known through the press as Sistie and Buzzie), for a number of years during his grandfather’s presidency. He graduated from St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in 1948 and served two years in the United States Army. After Roosevelt received his master’s degree from the School of Government and Public Law at Columbia University, he held different positions in international civil service for the United Nations.

Sharing His Experience

Roosevelt’s talk is part of the “Making Difference” lecture series sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy. In 2008, he released “Too Close to the Sun,” a memoir of his years spent growing up in the White House that discusses, among the fond memories, what life is like inside the cocoon of political fame, and is currently writing a new book on his White House years. He has also appeared in documentary films produced by the BBC, PBS and the History Channel about his famous grandparents..

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Salve Regina University’s Young Building. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by Nov. 1 to [email protected] or by calling 341-2927.
