Fit For Life: Surround Yourself With the Right People

On a train to Stamford Conn, to attend another conference, and after over 25 years of regularly attending these things, I still get excited to go.  

I get excited, because there is always something new to absorb and learn, and I gain knowledge in certain areas of the industry that change with each conference.

When I first became a trainer, I would always go to learn the new cutting-edge exercises and techniques that other gurus were using. I used to go to conferences, work out in different workshops and come home with an arsenal of new moves to put my clients through. After years of doing this, I developed and became pretty well versed with my programming and variety of exercises to administer. Although there will always be new stuff to learn, I have a pretty solid playbook, therefore I focus on other areas of the industry now.

In 2014, I attended a Fitness Business Summit that introduced me to Fit Body Boot Camp and exploring ways to capitalize on all the exercise knowledge that I developed over the years. What good is being a great trainer if I can only share what I know with a few people at a time? I was getting my clients great results, but with only so many hours in a day, I couldn’t reach as many people as I should be or wanted to. Being solo wasn’t scalable and put limits on what I could do. So, I bought into a franchise and opened my own facility.

Now that I catapulted myself into owning my own business, I had to make it work. Although I had been working for myself for years, owning a business was completely new to me, therefore I needed to learn how to market, sell, and manage my numbers. Then I had to learn how to hire the right people and train a team, so I could become profitable and build an empire that could change thousands of people’s lives for the better.

This will be a never-ending quest to get better and develop as a leader and authority in the industry.

It’s like your own personal fitness routine.

You set goals, and whether you reach them or not, you need to keep working on them to not only maintain them, but to keep sharpening yourself to get better.

When you let the intensity, or frequency of your routine lack, you go backwards, or stay stagnant. Therefore, you can’t stop, and you need to make it part of your daily routine. Like owning a business, the work never stops, and “good enough” is never acceptable. When you are striving for a certain result, you can never become complacent, or you will surely regress.

Another BIG reason I attend conferences on a regular basis is that it helps build emotional security. When you go to the gym, workout, eat healthy, sleep, and take care of your body, you are developing physical security. You are putting yourself in a position to be healthier, avoid sickness, build strength, stability, and vitality.

Emotional security is also a byproduct of working out in a community or “team” environment. Your self-esteem elevates to new levels when you get encouragement to succeed and get commended for doing good things for yourself. You are building your extended team or network, and that creates a powerful mindset because you get unconditional support from the people you surround yourself with.

Many people on the outside don’t get it.

Regardless of your goals, there will be people around you that don’t understand your mission, therefore they won’t be available to provide you with the emotional security needed to achieve the next level.

We have created a community at Providence Fit Body Boot Camp that not only gets people in great physical shape, but provides emotional support through our group exercise sessions, our private members Facebook and on-line coaching platforms.

Over the years of going to different events, and seeing different groups of people, I have developed a nationwide network of professionals on all levels. I call this network my outside team.

If I want marketing, hiring, leadership, or sales advice, I have someone different I can call for any pressing issue I may have. When we meet in person, it becomes a reunion and we get to discuss different struggles, or problems we may be facing.

That’s the power of an outside team. Being able to talk or meet someone, and leaving with a positive mindset, knowing you’re going in the right direction. That’s what I call emotional support, and we all need it in one form or another.

Everyone will face setbacks, problems, and adversity on different levels. Sometimes to the point that you ask yourself questions like “Am I wasting my time?”, “Is this worth it?”, “Will I ever reach my goals and become successful?”.

It’s inevitable and every person will go through it, so having a support system, and being around people that have been in your shoes or have reached success doing the same thing you are doing is extremely helpful with reducing anxiety and self-doubt.

So, in conclusion, as human beings with thoughts and feelings, we all need security.

We focus on financial security, we lock our doors for security from intruders, and we exercise to secure our health, but sometimes we overlook what needs to be done to help us with emotional security, and in my opinion that’s the most important factor to remedy to achieve success.

My advice is to seek out or develop your extended family, community, or team. It will give you a lift when you are feeling down, and it will help you fill your bucket when it feels empty. Make the effort to stay connected to these people and share your victories and defeats.

It’s easier to win when you are on the right team and surround yourself with the right people!!

JeFit is another fitness app that has rave reviews.  It not only tracks progress for you, but offers a huge database of workouts.  While many apps offer community support, JeFit allows you to sync workouts with friends who use the app, offering a (real) virtual buddy system.

Strava gets the highest mark of all the cycling apps.  While it is also great for runners, the cyclers seem particularly inclined towards the fierce competition that can be ignited by this app.  You can track all of your rides via GPS, then you can compare your efforts to those logged by others in the community on the same stretch of road.  You can also join ongoing challenges that can net you great prizes (in addition to bragging rights).

YogaStudio gets the top vote for Yoga apps.  It has a lengthy collection of full class-length videos available at your fingertips.  Unlike many other apps, this one also allows you to customize your own video yoga class.  All of the poses are done by qualified yoga instructors, and you can find classes suitable for all levels of yogis.

Fooducate is an app all about educating people so that they make healthier food choices.  Although not perfect, this app is easy to use (you can even take pictures of bar codes to instantly find foods in their database).  It gives food a letter grade, tells you the pluses and minuses, and gives you better ranked alternatives.  You can also use it as a weight loss tool by tracking your daily calories.
