Great Summer Reads: Andy Cutler
Monday, August 02, 2010
Anyone who knows Providence's Andy Cutler knows that every conversation leads down interesting and unexpected paths, largely fueled by his incredible grasp of what's going on in myriad corners of the world, both local and global. It was irresistible to know what this consummate information voyager was reading this summer. His top four picks:
Sons of Providence, by Charles Rappleye
This is a fantastic look at the history of Rhode Island, Providence, and Brown University and its ties to the slave trade. It's a rich retrospective on the history of the Brown brothers and the origin of commerce in the Ocean State.
The Hidden Persuaders, by Vance Packard
Explores the use of psychological techniques and research used in directing consumer behavior, getting politicians elected, etc. post-WWII.
Ready, Set, Green: Eight Weeks to Modern Eco-Living, by Graham Hill & Meaghan O'Neill
Easily digestible techniques to live a more green lifestyle.
A Whole New Mind, by Daniel H. Pink
Pink identifies and explores the six "senses" crucial to success in the new economy and the necessity to grow right-brain development and capacity--design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning--and offering practical advice on how to nurture these skills within oneself.
