The view back: Chris Matthews brings Jack Kennedy to new life

One of the most outspoken men in media will be in Rhode Island in early December, sharing his views of one of history's most fascinating presidents.

Chris Matthews, best-selling author and host of MSNBC’s Hardball, will be at Barrington Books on Saturday, December 3, for a reception and signing of his new book, Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero.

Inside scoop on signing

Priority signing will be given to customers who order the book in advance. You can preorder by calling 245-7925 or visiting the store's Web site at www.barringtonbooks.com ($27.50). All guests waiting to have their book signed are invited to enjoy an exclusive reception held in the Barrington Books event space adjacent to the store.

Matthews on Kennedy

This new portrait of John F. Kennedy is based on interviews with those who knew him best, according to Matthews' publisher. By following the journey of Jack Kennedy’s life from his school days to the White House, through war and illness and his greatest triumphs, Chris Matthews brings us much closer to the man his own wife, Jacqueline, described as "elusive."

To Matthews, Kennedy has long been both an avatar and a puzzle, a beacon and a conundrum. “Whenever I spot the name in print, I stop to read," he says. "Any time I’ve ever met a person who knew him—someone who was there with JFK in real time—I crave hearing their first-person narrative.”

For years, Matthews has been collecting those stories. In Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero, the best-selling author and Kennedy expert has woven those firsthand encounters with JFK into a bildungsroman, telling the tale of how Kennedy grew from a child of privilege into a war hero and finally President of the United States, all the while coping with a life-threatening disease.

“In searching for Jack Kennedy my own way,” Matthews writes, “I found a fighting prince never free from pain, never far from trouble, never accepting the world he found, never wanting to be his father’s son. He was a far greater hero than he ever wished us to know.”

Matthews: author, journalist, no-nonsense political commentator

In addition to his high-profile stewardship of Hardball, Matthews was also until recently a nationally syndicated columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and is the author of best-selling books such as Now Let Me Tell You What I Really Think (2001), Hardball (1988), and Kennedy and Nixon (1996), which was selected by Reader's Digest magazine as part of its "Today's Best Nonfiction."  He joined the San Francisco Examiner in 1987 where he served as Washington Bureau Chief for 13 years.  Prior to entering journalism, Matthews served as White House aide and speechwriter to President Jimmy Carter and as a top aide to former Speaker of the House Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr.

Matthews began his career on television in 1994 as host of a two-hour nightly program on the NBC-owned America’s Talking network. Three years later, he launched Hardball, now on MSNBC.  He has been on the air every weekday night since.  In 2002, NBC inaugurated Sunday morning’s The Chris Matthews Show.

Chris Matthews reading and signing at Barrington Books, Saturday December 3, 1pm. 184 County Rd, Barrington, 245-7925.
