Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Serious star power is on its way to Rhode Island this spring.

Get ready for Bruce Willis, Ed Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Francis McDormand, Jason Schwartzman, and star director Wes Anderson.

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of The Rhode Island Film & Television Office, has confirmed that the critically acclaimed, Academy-award nominated director of Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox, among other films, will be making his next will be making his next feature film, Moonrise Kingdom, in Rhode Island.

The film is scheduled to begin principal photography this spring in numerous locations around the state.

The screenplay for Moonrise Kingdom is written by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola. Anderson will also produce, along with collaborators Scott Rudin, Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson. Indian Paintbrush Productions will finance and produce the picture.

A "spectacular moment in Rhode Island film history"

“This is a spectacular moment in Rhode Island film history," said Feinberg. "Wes Anderson is one of America’s most unique cinematic storytellers of our day.  He not only brings his own artistic style to film; he also attracts a treasure trove of high profile talent to each production he works on.  This wonderful story, in particular, is whimsical, nostalgic and rich in atmosphere.  We are very pleased that our hard-working local crew, talent pool and exceptional Rhode Island locations will be given the opportunity to shine in a movie that will be seen by a world-wide audience.”

More than star power... revenue too

“Not only is it exciting to have so many well-known Hollywood actors coming to Rhode Island for a major film production," said House Speaker Gordon Fox, "but most importantly, this production will generate much needed revenue for our state’s economy.  Movies like this one continue to keep our talented local crew members employed and our state’s hospitality and tourism industries will once again greatly benefit.  I am proud to welcome the cast and crew of Moonrise Kingdom to Rhode Island and offer the assistance of our state whenever possible”, House Speaker Gordon D. Fox stated.

“This exciting project is an example of the ways in which Rhode Island can build upon its strengths to foster job creation," said Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed. 'Our beautiful state is both diverse and compact, which lends itself wonderfully to the demands of the film industry. This project can help Rhode Island workers through jobs and internships in the film industry, use of Rhode Island vendors, and further promotion of our state through exposure of its many magnificent characteristics in a feature film.”

Newport's beauty highlighted

Evan Smith, President of the Newport & Bristol CVB, is delighted to have the filmmakers in his neck of the woods. “It’s always a thrill to have renowned filmmakers choose Newport County as the backdrop for their productions. This film will have a positive economic impact not only to Aquidneck island, but throughout the state, touching all segments of the hospitality industry, from lodging, dining, transportation, shopping to attractions and beyond! Moreover, television and film offers an incredible opportunity for a global audience to see this extraordinary destination, which ultimately helps to generate visitor interest to the area.”
