NEW: Newport Named Top 20 City Worldwide for Second Home

Wednesday, August 03, 2011

Add another feather to Newport's cap.

It's the only US city on The Telegraph's list, released today, of 20 Best Places to Buy a Second Home Abroad.

The UK news source put Newport in quite the company, worldwide. The only North American location featured, it keeps company with glamorous international locations including Puglia, Italy, Pattaya, Thailand, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Istanbul, Turkey.

"If you like boats, yachts, and messing around by the waterside," writes The Telegraph's Christopher Middleton, "this US version of Cowes is the place for you."

Newport: the Cowes of the US

This makes sense to UK readers, who know that Cowes is the home of international yacht racing on England's Isle of Wight. The world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, is underway right now, in fact.

No bargain shopping here, but Middleton pays no mind. "Top addresses are Bellevue and Ocean Avenues (prices from £2.5m-£11.3m), but there are places right on the harbour for around £1 million. You fly to Boston, and after a 75-minute drive, you’re dipping your toes in the water."

Do keep in mind that a British pound is worth about 1.64 US dollars right now.

"There's no law which says that when you're buying an overseas property, it has to be in Provence or Tuscany," he says. You don't need to tell that to Newporters.
