NEW: Providence Chosen One of the Most Underrated Cities in the World by Travel + Leisure
Wednesday, March 09, 2011
Providence has been named one of ten underrated cities in the world by none other than Travel + Leisure Magazine.
The magazine looked for cities worldwide that either outperformed old reputations (Detroit) or sat too close to a star city (Bratislava in the shadow of Prague). "But," wrote T+L, "if undiscovered art scenes, experimental cuisine, great architecture, and interesting neighborhoods are on your travel checklist, then these cities deserve a second look."
Providence's shout-out cited "a renewed waterfront, vibrant arts scene, and sophisticated dining [that have] turned this small college town into New England's most exciting city." T+L paid homage to New Urban Arts and AS220, the RISD Museum and the presence of rising young artists.
Dubbing the West End as "the city's epicenter of cool," the magazine evidenced "friendly dive bars, vintage stores, terrific eateries, and indie record stores." Special advice from the editors: "Swill cocktails at The Avery before moving on to the E&O Tap, a local institution." Finally, culinary darling Cook & Brown got props for bringing French finesse to down-home classics.
