bad driver

Not here, you don't: safe driving in the Ocean State

Get ready for a shocker.

After years of jokes at our expense, Rhode Island has been named the safest... SAFEST... state in the US for motorists.

A new research report by CarInsuranceComparison.com looked at statistics including drunk driving, failure to obey signals, fatalities, and traffic tickets. At the top of the pile? The #1 Safest State for Driving? Yes. Rhode Island.

Numbers don't lie

Rhode Island's win has much to do with its low fatality rate: #3 in the nation (behind #1 Massachusetts and #2 Minnesota). We also took top honors for Failure to Obey Signal (#1) and Careless Driving (#2) citations. We placed decently in ticketing (#13) and just outside the top half of the country for drunk driving (#28).

Among New England states, we bested Connecticut by one spot and Massachusetts was #3 safest. New Hampshire took the #5 slot, Maine #7, and Vermont a not-impressive #21.

And the overall gripe about New England drivers being the worst in general did not bear out in the report. In fact, the 10 worst states for drivers were in from rural areas in the South and West.

The scariest driving states:

South Carolina
Alabama
Montana
Kentucky
Arizona
Oklahoma
Texas
Florida
Missouri
Louisiana

The report was based on statistics from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (driving fatalities), the American Motorists Association (most tickets) and MADD (drunk drivers). For more information and the full rankings, go here.
