Happier days: Richard Hatch during the "Survivor" years

Talk about Survival instincts.

Newporter and reality TV celebrity Richard Hatch has made a new pitch - for a court-appointed, free lawyer to help him with an appeal.

A filing that the famous Survivor winner made in US District Court in Providence for free representation was made public on Friday. Hatch has been in a federal prison in West Virginia serving time for a probation violation since March 2011. He was sent to jail for nine months at that point for failing to pay taxes on his Survivor winnings of $1 million.

Hatch has appealed to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, but US Magistrate (and former RI Governor) Lincoln Almond has stated that Hatch should be denied free legal counsel, citing that his appeal is not "taken in good faith."
