Care packages for RI troops overseas

Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts will launch Operation Holiday Cheer 2011 tomorrow, October 5, at an announcement event accompanied by Brigadier General Mark Jannitto and corporate/community sponsors at the National Guard Schofield Armory, 705 New London Avenue in Cranston.

The initiative relies on sponsors and the general public for donations to pay for postage and for “wish list” items to fill 500 care packages for National Guard troops who are stationed overseas during the upcoming holiday months. Volunteers are organized by the Rhode Island National Guard's Family Assistance Center to assemble the care packages. The packages are shipped with the help of the United States Postal Service.

"I am excited to kick-off Operation Holiday Cheer, now in its ninth year," Roberts said. “When our troops are sent overseas it should be our mission to support them and their families. We know every day away from home is difficult, but it is especially hard during the holiday season. These care packages are the least we can do to show our thanks and remember the troops' continued service to our nation while providing them with some comfort from home," she said.

Roberts will announce the corporate sponsors and the two most important days for Operation Holiday Cheer volunteers--the collection date and pack and ship date.
