NEW: Universal Studios Filming Car Chase Downtown Tomorrow

Monday, September 12, 2011

Look both ways before you cross Washington Street tomorrow. Universal Studios will be in town for two days, filming a car chase scene for its new supernatural action-adventure film R.I.P.D., according to Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of The Rhode Island Film & Television Office.

R.I.P.D., based on the graphic novel of the same name, stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as two undead police officers dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect the world from an increasingly destructive array of creatures who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.  Robert Schwentke (Red, The Time Traveler's Wife) directs. Neal H. Moritz (the Fast and Furious series, I Am Legend), Michael Fottrell (the Fast and Furious series, Live Free or Die Hard) and Mike Richardson (Hell Boy, Hellboy II) produces.

The two-day second unit shoot begins tomorrow, and should create plenty of fun spectating for locals in the Washington Street area.

Film Office Executive Director Steven Feinberg said, "We're excited to welcome Universal Studios to the city of Providence and State of Rhode Island for what should be a spectacular shoot. The team producing this sequence is composed of top-notch professionals who are the best in their field. The State Film Office is working in conjunction with the City of Providence's Art, Culture and Tourism Office and we're delighted to open our doors to this feature film.  We encourage Universal to come back at any time."

House Speaker Gordon Fox stated, "The General Assembly was proud to continue to support the film tax credit program to attract such industry leaders as Universal Studios to our state.  The presence of this renowned film-making company, even for a brief time, will provide work for our locally based talent and may lead to bigger Universal productions in Rhode Island in the future."

If you're looking for Bridges and Reynolds, you're out of luck. Principal cast will not be a part of filming in Providence.

The motion picture will be released in theaters on June 28, 2013.
