Oscar-Nominated Shorts at Cable Car This Weekend

Saturday, February 12, 2011

With the Oscars just around the corner, who's up for Best Actor and Actress, plus Best Picture, is all the buzz. But two less buzzed-about categories - Best Animated and Live Action Short Films - get their day in the sun (and on the screen) this weekend at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence.

Daniel Kamil, the owner of the Cable Car, feels that it’s important to show these films in two respects. "One," he said, "the short film genre gets short shrift, as the only avenue for them are film festivals and the occasional viewing on the Sundance or IFC TV channels. Secondly, but related, during the Academy Awards when these nominations are announced many people tune out as they have not been afforded the opportunity to see them.”

Now's your opportunity.

And the nominees are...

The nominated short films for animation are:
    •    Day and Night (6 min)
    •    Let’s Pollute (6 min)
    •    The Lost Thing (15 min)
    •    Madagascar, Carnet de Voyage (11 min)
    •    The Gruffalo (27 min)

The nominated short films for live action are:
    •    The Confession (26 min)
    •    The Crush (15 min)
    •    God of Love (18 min)
    •    Na Wewe (19 min)
    •    Wish 143 (24 min)

Great chance to see them all

Coming from countries like Belgium, Germany, and the US, the films range from fantasy to tragedy to romance. This is the third year that the Cable Car has held this event, and they have no intention of stopping it, as the response from movie fans who may normally miss out on the chance to see these films due to their often-limited release in theaters has been “overwhelmingly enthusiastic,” said Kamil

As for which films Kamil thinks will win, in animation he’s backing The Gruffalo due to its high production values, story, and voice acting (some of the voice actors include Robbie Coltrane and Helena Bonham Carter). For live-action he’s behind The Confession for its great storyline.

But don’t take his word for it; come and make up your own mind about which films should take home the prize. The animated short films are premiering at 6:30pm on Friday, February 11, with the live-action shorts showing afterwards at 8:30. The rest of the show times can be found at www.cablecarcinema.com.

The Cable Car Cinema, 204 South Main St, Providence, 272-3970.
