Peter Max Coming to Providence

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Pop culture icon Peter Max, known best for his colorful, psychedelic works of art celebrating the counterculture movement of 60s, comes to Providence this weekend to present his latest works, "Pop to Patriotism,” at Gallery 17 Peck on Federal Hill. The culmination of a 10-day showcase of events, including an “un-crating” party, a children's coloring contest and a fundraiser, the internationally-acclaimed artist will mingle among art-lovers both Saturday, Aug. 28 and Sunday, Aug. 29. Max aficionados can meet and greet the artist, plus get up close and personal with his works, like a portrait of Taylor Swift and life-size rendition of Shaquille O'Neal. “I do about 20-30 shows a year, and this is really going to be one of the nicest,” says Max. “Not having been in Rhode Island for so long, it will be a big thrill.” Max adds that he loves meeting his collectors and fans, and for every person who walks away with an acquisition, he’ll do a drawing on the back, right on the spot, autographed and personalized for buyers.

Secrets Revealed

The secret to his work, Max says, is that he lets his creativity flow freely. “When I come to the studio every morning, and I go into my paint room with all the empty canvases and even when I first have paint on my brush, I still don’t know what I’m going to do, and that’s the secret, to just let it happen,” he shares. “I do this, 5, 6, 7 times a day. In the end, I look back and go ‘wow.’”

Meet Peter Max Saturday evening from 6pm-9pm, and on Sunday from 1pm-4pm at Gallery 17 Peck, 303 Atwells Avenue, Providence.
