video: Providence After School Alliance Makes Thank You Video for Cicilline

Saturday, January 08, 2011

With former Providence Mayor David Cicilline preparing for his first week as the newest member of Congress from Rhode Island, middle schoolers from the capital city got on video to thank him and wish him well.

The middle schoolers are participants in Providence After School Alliance (PASA) and the AfterZone, model programs that have provided 1,800 local youth annually with high-quality hands-on learning opportunities after school. Cicilline was cited by the organization for "his dedication and vision," and so the kids sent the former Mayor the best thank-you note their generation knows - a YouTube video.

The video was shot and edited by Desi Washington, who leads a very popular AfterZone program called Media Youth Television (MYTV), where he teaches kids how to produce their own videos.

Recently, Providence hosted educators from around the country to observe PASA's work in local schools. The papartnership between public and non-profit after-school providers spearheaded by Mayor Cicilline and is funded through support of The Wallace Foundation, Bank of America, the City of Providence, the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, the C.S. Mott Foundation, the Rhode Island Foundation and other sponsors.
