Providence Children’s Film Festival Kicks Off This Week

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

This is a great event for grown-ups and kids. In its third year, the 2011 Providence Children' Film Festival is here, ready banish the winter blahs with a full slate of impressive screenings.

The fun runs February 17 through February 22 at The Cable Car Cinema, RISD Auditorium, and RISD Museum Metcalfe Auditorium.  There's a lively mix for all ages: animation, live action and docs feature stunning beauty, amazing adventures and lots of laughs.

Founded in 2009 to bring high quality, independent and international children’s films, animation, and documentaries to Rhode Island, the festival has grown quickly and is increasingly becoming an arts destination event for families in the region.

Careful film selection

Films are selected through several means: Award winners and favorites at major children’s film festivals around the world, through an open call for submissions, and through recommendations and submissions by RI filmmakers and educators.  Programming includes live action, animation and documentaries, shorts and features, and films made by RI youth, including the films made in our festival workshops.  The festival committee looks especially for films with content that speaks positively to children and families of diverse ages, backgrounds and ethnicities.  Parents are given guidance to content and age appropriateness in the program notes.

Workshops for elementary through high school students

Educational opportunities also play a role in the festival, and several events offer local children and youth the opportunity to learn about different filmmaking techniques through workshops led by experienced animators and filmmakers.

For a full schedule of workshops and screenings, as well as passes to the RISD Museum, plus family discounts, go to the Festival Web site, here. Secure tickets in advance at www.brownpapertickets.com.
