Quilting Expo Comes to Worcester

Friday, April 13, 2012

Sewers and quilters from all across New England will gather at Worcester's DCU Center this weekend for the largest sewing and quilting expo in the Northeast.

Original Sewing & Quilt Expo is in its seventeenth year of bringing sewers and quilters of all backgrounds together for the one-stop shop and learning experience that the exhibition boasts.

The expo tours all around the eastern part country, with stops in Atlanta, St. Louis, Cleveland and Raleigh. This will be the eleventh year the expo has stopped in Worcester.

The Original Sewing & Quilt Expo – which runs April 12-15 – features more than 300 quilts on display.

“There are the super-traditional quilts, which are scientifically mastered, timeless treasures of design in quilting,” expo co-owner Mark Ingraham said. “Those are juxtaposed with modern quilting displays, which are a post-modern take on where quilting is going. It's really pushing quilting to the limit.”

“Untold Truths,” is one of the featured quilts this year. It is politically driven, portraying an understanding of racism in America today.

Quilts of Valor,” a group that makes quilts for veterans returning home, will also be at the Original Sewing & Quilting Expo. Any veterans that would like to see the quilts being made or anyone looking to contribute to the quilts are given admission free of charge.

Additionally, the expo has full-day, hands on seminars that will open attendees' minds to new and different forms of sewing and quilting – such as “Start an Embroidery Business in Your Home,” “Signature Seams I,” and “Texture Transformations.”

The hosts of these seminars are quilting celebrities, who have appeared on television and are well-known within the quilting community.

One of these celebrities is Holice Turnbow of Sturbridge, who has been a major contributor to quilting for the last sixty years or so.

“He's legendary in the quilting world,” Ingraham said of Turnbow. “He has survived three generations of quilting, and has been helping it evolve since the seventies.”

The expo also includes free stage presentations exploring everything from learning how to “Sew to Look Slimmer,” to “Amazing Sweatshirt Jackets and Embellished Tees,” to presentations of fashion shows and prize giveaways.

The biggest draw is the attendance of boutiques from the area and all over the country.

“It's nice because you don't have to drive from boutique to boutique, you get to see it all in one place,” said Ingraham. “This is the weekend to buy a sewing machine.”

Classes must be registered for in advance, and admission to the expo is $10. The expo runs10:00 AM-6:00 PM Thursday and Friday and 10:00 AM-5:30 PM on Saturday. More information on the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo can be found here.
