The end of summer is the perfect time to take a day trip with family and friends. Before the kids start school in September, use the next few weekends to explore parts of New England you never have before.
From hiking trails to amusement parks to historical sites to music venues, there is something for everyone.

Gillette Castle
Gillette Castle was designed by William Gillette. He was an American actor who famously portrayed Sherlock Holmes on stage. There is a system of hidden mirrors for surveillance of the public rooms from the master bedroom that was built by Gillette.
The castle itself is definitely worth a visit, but after the tour, make sure to hike on the grounds of the Gillette Castle State Park, located on the chain of hills called the Seven Sisters, and overlooking the Connecticut River. The Park features lots of picturesque trails.

Mystic Seaport
Mystic Seaport is the largest maritime museum in the world. For young kids, there is an educational, hands-on program.
The town of Mystic has a variety of things to do. There are restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries.

Kick back, relax, and enjoy the music.
Tanglewood is a music venue in Lenox and Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
Since 1937, it has been the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Newport Cliff Walk
This is the famous Newport Cliff walk, a 3.5 mile trail sandwiched between two extremes: harsh ocean cliffs and glamorous mansions. Generally, it is a fairly easy walk with little elevation change, but there are a few places rough patches where good footwear is necessary.
