Travel Back to the Middle Ages at WAM’s Family Day This Weekend

Once upon a time, every land was full of brave knights, fire-breathing dragons, and majestic kings. And this Sunday, at the Worcester Art Museum’s Castles and Dragons Family Day, they will appear once more. From 11:00 a.m. through 2:30 p.m., enjoy a day of fun art activities, storytelling and gallery tours while learning more about the magic of medieval times.

Located at the Worcester Art Museum on 55 Salisbury Street, this fun family event is open to the public. Children aged 17 and under are free, while regular admission is $14 for adults or $12 for seniors and college students with ID. By visiting the museum's website and printing out a Castles and Dragons event flyer, one adult will be admitted free.

“Although we were inspired by the news that the Higgins Armory arms and armor collection will be joining our own holdings in Spring 2014, there are quite a few examples of men in armor, castles, and dragons in the paintings and sculptures already on view,” says Alison Berkeley, manager of marketing and public relations, of the event’s inspiration.

At both 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, allow yourself to be enchanted by the short story "The Paper Bag Princess," narrated by a knight in shining armor who will be visiting from the Higgins Armory.

Don’t miss the half-hour guided gallery tour at 11:30 a.m., where you and your family will learn fun facts and stories about the pieces in the museum’s medieval collection.

All throughout the morning and into the afternoon, visitors will also be able to create medieval “stained glass,” design hinged dragon puppets, construct and decorate their own 2D castles, and complete their own rubbings while learning about this ancient print-making technique.

“Even the littlest kids can do this project, and the result is quite beautiful” Berkeley says of the event’s “stained glass” art project. “Then, families will have the opportunity to meet Nick Mazzamurro, a contemporary stained glass artist, who will be working on a work of art in the museum’s lobby.”

Engage your family in an exciting scavenger hunt through the museum to find castles, dragons and armor. Upon your return to Salisbury Hall, you will win a prize.

Additionally, everyone will have the opportunity to meet a knight and a princess, right out of the storybook fables.

“We will have two visitors from the Higgins Armory here at the museum,” says Berkeley. “One will be dressed in armor and will do two storytelling sessions in the museum’s Chapter House, which will be an amazing backdrop to his character. The second will be dressed as a medieval princess. I think that having these guests roam the galleries and studios will bring a really fun edge to the day.”

The enchanting story-tale age of dragons and princesses will come alive at the Worcester Art Museum this Sunday. This is one medieval event that your family will not want to miss.
