URI to Host Social Media “Social”

Monday, November 28, 2011

Meet, greet & tweet with some of RI's most networked social media pros

URI's students see not only the value of social media, but of getting to know some of the state's leading purveyors. With that in mind, the University of Rhode Island will hold its first Social Media Social event where professionals and URI students can network over ice cream and learn from one another. The public is invited to join in.

Top social media professionals will present their insights during keynote talks and a panel discussion. Hosted by URI student-led Public Relations Society, the “Social Media Social” will be this Tuesday, Nov. 29,  at 6:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The event will feature keynote speeches by Rhode Island social media professionals Suzanne McDonald, Chief Content Strategist at Designated Editor, and Shawn Simmons, Director of Public Relations at StyleWeek.

A panel discussion led by URI Communications Assistant Professor Adam Roth will allow students to ask questions about careers in social media. Panelists are:

Kevin Vine Manager of Interactive Marketing Dunkin’ Brands
Nichole Wardle of Longwood Events
Brian Hodge of GoProvidence.com.
Joannah Portman-Daly of the URI Writing Department.

Students will also network with web and social media professionals, business owners, and members of Newport Interactive Marketers, the region’s premiere resource for social media and Web 2.0 networking and learning.

The Social Media Social, sponsored by the URI Harrington School of Communication and Media and the Communications Studies Department, will be held in the Memorial Union Ballroom, 50 Lower College Road, Kingston.
